MASTERCLASS: KILN CASTING WITH ANGELA JARMAN
with Angela Jarman

Kiln cast glass by Angela Jarman

COURSE OUTLINE:
This class focusses on creating form and texture with cast glass. We’ll start with basic clay and wax modelling to achieve results quickly. The emphasis will be on working with wax and moulded textures and translating these models through lost wax casting to explore qualities in glass, particularly surface pattern and texture. The class will be fully comprehensive demonstrating every stage of working; however for those with more experience, a more detailed approach can be taken with lots of useful hints and tips from Angela.

TUTOR PROFILE - ANGELA JARMAN

Angela Jarman is an award winning glass artist and a graduate in Glass from the Royal College of Art. Her work is held in major collections in UK and Europe.  Whilst at the RCA, Jarman became aware of the link between developments in science and how it was being applied to nature in genetic modification  Her work emphasises form, texture and structure.

Angela Jarman’s creative ideas as a whole stem from her long interest in biology and the natural world.

“The ideas for my work stem from a long interest I have in biology and the natural world. I look to many sources for inspiration – animal, vegetable or mineral, but particularly aspects of growth, reproduction and multiplication - all the while trying to retain a sense of ambiguity. I want my work to refer to nature, but to appear “unnatural”, and to carry a sense of the uncanny and sinister through subtle references. I’ve built up themes with a vocabulary of my own that I use by repeating and duplicating a specific part, or creating form on the inside through the use of a textured core.

By using only clear glass for its transparency, and colours such as aluminium and silver for their neutrality, I hope to draw attention away from the showy aspect of glass, and focus on the form, structure and texture of a piece. I also use black glass – I like the way it seems to suck in the light, and appear so dense and unglasslike, and also have such a barren and sinister quality.”

Jarman received a Crafts Council Setting Up Grant in 2002. As well as the Crafts Council Collection, her work is held in other public collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. Her studio is based in London and Jarman is represented by Adrian Sassoon Gallery www.adriansassoon.com
